Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Really Need a Lawyer?
It's a fair question - and one we hear often, but it is not a question you need to answer alone. At Betts Law Company, we understand that legal issues can feel overwhelming. That's why we offer a consultation to talk through your matter and help you understand your options. Whether it’s a company restructure, contract dispute, a separation, or a general business concern we are here to guide you. Legal advice is not just for courtrooms; it is for clarity, protection, and peace of mind.
How Much Will It Cost?
Let's be honest - legal services are not cheap, but neither are mistakes. At Betts Law Company, we aim to provide value, not just invoices. From the moment we engage with you, we comply with Legal Profession Uniform Law (LPUL) by providing a full cost disclosure to avoid surprise costs. You will receive a tailored estimate for your matter and regular updates. In some cases, we can offer fixed fees or payment plans to suit your situation. In addition, costs might not apply if we engage you in a Pro-Bono matter.
How Do Lawyers Actually Bill?
We believe in transparency. Most of our billing is based on time calculated in 6-minute units and itemised in clear statements so you can see exactly what you are paying for. We also offer fixed-fee services for certain legal matters. And for some community or non-profit matters, we may work pro bono. At BLC we believe access to justice should be for everyone.
Why Choose Betts Law Company Over Another Firm?
Because we care about the outcome and about you. With a strong reputation across family, business, not-for-profit, and ESG law, our team blends big-picture thinking with community values. Based on Collins Street in Melbourne, our team of lawyers bring a proactive, personalised approach to each matter. Our commercial team helps you navigate risk, avoid costly disputes, and grow with confidence. Whether you are drafting contracts, reviewing a merger, or launching a new venture, Betts Law Company is the legal arm of your enterprise.
What Business Structure Should I Choose?
Sole trader? Partnership? Company? Trust? Each comes with its own benefits, responsibilities, and tax implications. Choosing the wrong structure could cost you in the long run. Before you register anything, book a consultation with our commercial team. We will walk you through your options and tailor advice to your goals so you can focus on building, not battling.
What Should I Do After Separation?
First, take a breath - you're not alone. Separation can feel overwhelming, but it's important to know that not every situation requires court involvement. Many families are able to reach fair and practical solutions through negotiation, mediation, and legal support.

Whether you're creating parenting plans, dividing property, or seeking mediation, we'll guide you every step of the way. And if court intervention becomes necessary - due to safety concerns, complex disputes, or enforcement issues - we are fully prepared to advocate for you with skill and determination.
Can You Help with Parenting Agreements?
Absolutely. Navigating parenting arrangements after separation can be emotionally challenging, but it doesn't need to be adversarial. Our family lawyers work with you to develop parenting plans that are practical, child-focused, and legally enforceable. We prioritise respectful, cooperative solutions that support the long-term wellbeing of your family.
